For the plantera fight you can actually get more dps if you swap out 3 sanguine bats for 3 spiders (no more than 3 because iFrames), although thier base damage is lower they attack over twice as fast.

Pygmy staff probably isn't worth farming for, just stick with sanguine for your first pumpkin moon then use raven staff.

The Pygmy Staff is useful in events, or specifically enemies that are bound to the ground. Other than that, they’ll be swapped out pretty quickly after certain events

Farm The Empress at night until you get the Kaleidoscope. Then, you do it during the day. For this, use Hallowed Armor, the Sanguine Staff, your new Kaleidoscope, a Brain of Confusion, and a Black Belt. Good luck. Upon defeat, you get the Terraprisma, the last summon upgrade you’ll need.

I really don’t recommend killing Empress immediately after Plantera, especially during the day. A lot of unneccesary effort when Summoner already has enough to prosper during post-Plantera, and you really shouldn’t need the equivalent of a Moon Lord drop to powerforce the part of the game Summoner does the best at anyway.

If you do, however, I strongly recommend Desert Tiger over Sanguine. 1.4.1.2 gave it a buff that basically makes it act like Flinx, allowing it to actually keep up with and has incredible for single target DPS (although somewhat lacking in crowds). Note that it’s bugged if you stop time.

I’d honestly write the guide assuming the player is more casual and isn’t gonna try to rush Empress instantly. In which case, progression after Plantera would be
-Tiki or Hallowed Armor, Desert Tiger and Morningstar
-Pumpkin Moon for ravens and dark harvest andvarious upgrades, then ravens and dark for martians. Usually desert tiger synergizes better with firecracker, but use it alongside morningstar for the first few waves.
-Ravens and dark harvest for martians, to get xeno
-Xeno and morningstar to get kaleidoscope
-Xeno and kaleidoscope into pillars
-Dragon and kaleidoscope (firecracker’s range becomes lacking)

hey Waluigi, this guy disagrees with you

But wouldn't tempest staff have at least some use if you get it pre-plantera? Like, some people like fighting duke pre-mechs or alongside mechs for his wings (or the mount if you're in expert), so if you get the tempest staff at that point, why not use it?

You can disagree with me on when to kill Empress all you wamt, but Desert Tiger has been numerically proven to outpreform Sanguine on the Empress of Light/Duke Fishron.

Bald of you to assume I disagree with him. First of all, empress herself is arguably a lot harder than duke - with fishron, more than half of the fight is just dodging his dashes - learn how to do so, and you're pretty much good to go, whilst empress can overwhelm you with attacks no matter how well you know her pattern. Second of all, I said that it can be done pre-mechs, not that it must be done. You, on the other hand, not only suggest people to fight empress right after plantera, but also fight her durning the daytime, where she arguably becomes the hardest boss in the game, no less.

Empress of light isn't that much harder than duke, she's just new so most player's haven't learned her attacks yet.

FAQs

Is hornet or Imp Staff better? ›

Yea Imp misses more and fires slower than Hornets despite doing way better per hit damage. Hornets will have better overall DPS from what i noticed. Also Imp can't fire through and in water , hornets can so that's another thing to consider when you are exploring areas with a lot of water.

Is the Flinx staff good? ›

The Flinx Staff is a reliable alternative to other early-game summoning weapons such as the Finch Staff and Slime Staff. Unlike other early-game summon weapons, it can be crafted using relatively common ingredients and does not require luck to obtain.

Is Summoner weak in Terraria? ›

Summoners have very low defense, with even Stardust armor having only 38 defense, so the overall goal of a summoner is to avoid all attacks while letting their minions and their whips deal the damage.

What is the best modifier for the vampire frog staff? ›

The best modifier is Mythical but Godly, Demonic, Ruthless, Furious, and Masterful all raise its base damage by the same amount due to rounding.

Is Hornet or the Knight stronger? ›

Puppy: Hornet was a fine warrior- one of the best, actually, but she couldn't stand up to Specter Knight's superior strength, durability and arsenal.

Is the Optic Staff better than the Imp Staff? ›

The Imp Staff is 21 damage, whereas the Optic Staff is 30 damage. The Optic will essentially have twice the minions, from what I've seen, which should really put up the DPS. They are both the same speed, and velocity.

What is the rarest staff in Terraria? ›

The Slime Staff generally has the rarest drop chance of any weapon, with minor exceptions. The typical drop rate from most slimes and Slimed Zombies is 1/10000 (0.01%) / 1/7000 (0.0143%) .

How rare is the Vampire Frog Staff? ›

The Vampire Frog Staff has a 1/8 (12.5%) chance of being dropped by Zombie Mermen and Wandering Eye Fish, both of which spawn while fishing during a Blood Moon. Its best modifiers are Ruthless, Mythical, Masterful, Godly, Demonic, or Furious, which all raise its base damage by the same amount due to rounding.

Is Abigail's flower good? ›

Despite being a pre-Hardmode summon weapon, Abigail's Flower can work well in Hardmode, and can be a good substitute for Hardmode summon items, particularly due to the fact that it gains additional damage per summon in Hardmode. This is especially noticeable when paired with the Firecracker.

What is the best summoner armor? ›

Best Armor for Summoners in Terraria. The Obsidian Armor, Bee Armor, and Stardust Armor sets are excellent for any Summoner in Terraria.

Each of the Tavernkeep's sentry summon weapons come in three tiers: Rod, Cane, and Staff; with the Staff being the most expensive and the most powerful.

What is the difference between a hornet and a vampire frog in Terraria? ›

Hornets do nine base damage but can fly and shoot projectiles. Granted, these projectiles shatter upon hitting a solid block. Vampire frogs do eleven base damage but cannot fly, instead leaping to their opponent and hitting them with their close-range tongue.

What is the strongest staff in Terraria? ›

The Diamond Staff is the strongest of the seven gem staves.

What is the best Imp Staff mod? ›

Its best modifier is Ruthless. The Mythical modifier provides the widest array of stat bonuses, but these primarily affect the initial summon rather than the resulting minion. Additionally, minions cannot deal critical hits. The only lasting advantage a Mythical Imp Staff has over a Ruthless one is knockback.
