Summerville City Council Meeting Monday

The Summerville City Council will be holding their monthly meeting for June coming up on Monday evening at Summerville City Hall. On the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting the council will be discussing a plan to recognize some of Summerville’s oldest businesses. Also, on the agenda, the council will be looking to authorize the mayor to modify a GEFA loan and be considering updating the surcharge rate for the Summerville Mohawk Plant. The council will also have a second reading of the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 budget ordinance. The meeting gets underway at 5 PM and the public is invited to attend.

Unemployment Claims In Georgia Declined Last Week

Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Georgia dropped last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, fell to 3,260 in the week ending June 1, down from 4,238 the week before, the Labor Department said. U.S. unemployment claims rose to 229,000 last week, up 8,000 claims from 221,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis. North Dakota saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims jumping by 164.7%. Puerto Rico, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop in new claims, with claims dropping by 43.6%.

Rome Red Lobster Slated For Closure

If you love those cheddar biscuits from Red Lobster, you may want to grab some right away. The Red Lobster in Rome is slated for closure as part of a last-ditch effort by the restaurant chain to regain solvency. CNN reported this past week that the company is more than $1 billion in debt and the company is selling off locations to pay creditors. The Rome Red Lobster on Shorter Avenue is one of twelve more locations in the Peach State that will be closed, according to reports. Red Lobster, which was founded in 1968, once had around 650 restaurants in the United States and internationally. The restaurant chain reported $12.5 million in losses in the fourth quarter of 2023.

45 Cases Of Whooping Cough Reported In Georgia

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that cases of Whooping Cough, or pertussis, are on the rise. There are nearly three times as many cases reported this year compared to 2023 in the U.S. That includes 45 cases of Whooping Cough in Georgia, according to the CDC.

Adairsville Man’s Case Still Pending In Federal Court

The case by the Federal government against a thirty-one-year-old Adairsville man who was allegedly involved in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol is still pending Jacob Davis was arrested on Oct. 17, 2023 in Adairsville after investigators identified him from photos taken of the riot at the Capitol. An indictment stated that images and phone records place Davis on the west side of the U.S. Capitol. Prosecutors say Davis participated in the riots and threw a long wooden board striking officers attempting to defend the Capitol. Davis faces felony charges of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon, and obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder as well as misdemeanor charges. Accidental Drowning Reported On Friday Evening In Chattooga County

A man drowned on Friday evening in the Subligna area of Chattooga County. According to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader: On Friday evening around 4:40 Emergency responders were dispatched to a residence on Narrows Road regarding a male who had flipped his boat in his pond, went underwater after a few minutes and had not re-surfaced. Sheriff’s Office personnel met with Fire services from Subligna fire dept on the scene. A Subligna firefighter and a Sheriff’s investigator entered the water and located the victim. The victim, 74 year old Eric Scoggins, did not survive. -Sheriff Mark A. Schrader

Fatal ATV Crash In Menlo Area Saturday Morning

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that a seven-year-old child from out of town was killed in a tragic ATV accident near the intersection of Garvin Road and Echols Road between Menlo and Perennial Springs on Saturday morning. According to the sheriff, the child was the only person on the ATV at the time of the accident. No names have been released, but the sheriff asked that people would keep the family of the child in their prayers.
